Poker is a game that anyone can play with a deck of cards and a few chips. The ease of playing, coupled with the thrill of every game, poker attracts people from all walks of life. These include actors, businessmen, entertainers and sports stars. These stars bring a huge bankroll with them and challenge themselves to learn and master the game. And mind you, some of these celebrity poker players have become quite good.
That being said, in this blog, we outline some of the top celebrity poker players. You may know some of them from the movies and some from sports, and you can let us know which one you think is the most exciting entry on the list.
#1 Gerard Pique
Gerard Pique is a Spanish football star and plays for Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest clubs. Despite being busy in his football duties for his country and club, Gerard Pique is one of the celebrity poker players that have quite an impressive poker career.
Before he moved to Spain, Pique played for Manchester United, where he got the taste for poker. Since then, Pique has made appearances at major tournaments, including the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and European Poker Tour (EPT) events. He also has over half a million dollars under his belt as poker winnings, with his biggest score of $392,515 at the €25,000 No-Limit Hold’em Event at the European Poker Tour – EPT Barcelona 2019.
#2 Ben Affleck
Affleck started playing poker in his younger days and hit it off instantly. However, he was allegedly thrown out of a casino, when he was reading cards at a table playing Blackjack. To help you understand better, reading or counting cards is a Blackjack strategy to determine whether the next card will be advantageous for the dealer or the player. This is considered illegal and can get you banned from a casino.
After this alleged incident, Affleck returned to the poker tables to get professional training. Since then, he has had some success in public tournaments, and his biggest score came in 2004 when he won $356,400 at the $ 9,900 + 100 No-Limit Hold’em Championship, at the California State Poker Championship 2004. Affleck is a regular in small buy-in private tables and is often known for his careful play. He was also a player in the infamous Molly Bloom games.
#3 Tobey Maguire
Remember the original Spider-Man, who fought the Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, Sandman and Venom, before the Avengers became a thing? Well, we are talking about Tobey Maguire, one of the most active celebrity poker players. Maguire is an avid poker player and has been playing it for over a decade and a half.
He has gained quite a reputation for his aggressive plates and is often seen in both online and offline events. Another regular of Molly Bloom’s poker table, according to rumours, Maguire had a bit of a temper and smug persona while he played high-stakes. It is estimated that Maguire might have won up to $30 to $40 million from private games.
#4 Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps, the swimming prodigy and the most decorated olympian of all time, is a victor at the poker table as well. He learned the game of poker from his former roommate, who himself became a professional poker player. While Phelps is not extremely active in the poker community, he has some decent finishes under his belt. He even appeared at 2018 World Series Of Poker, Las Vegas.
#5 Matt Damon
Poker fans can never forget Matt Damon’s role in the movie ‘Rounders’, and it would be cruel if he did not play poker in real life. Another participant of Molly’s Game, Damon has even had WSOP appearances. While he is not seen much in the public forum, his private poker shenanigans are really famous. His movie buddy Ed Norton is also seen playing with him, and both often play poker behind-the-scenes.
Final Thoughts
The game of poker draws players from all professions. It doesn’t matter if you are a star cricketer or a stellar actor, on a poker table everyone’s the same. Being rich and famous will not guarantee your victory, and only your skill and a bit of luck. This doesn’t stop celebrity poker players from flocking the poker tables, and chip it out with everyone.
While this list only includes five celebrity poker players, there are many that have found their way around the poker table. Which one did you find the most interesting? Let us know in the comments.
